This type of testing is performed strictly over the Internet, primarily to determine the effectiveness of the firewall. If the firewall has vulnerabilities, they will be discovered through a variety of tools we use: Symantec's NetRecon network security probe, Nessus, and/or Internet Scanner and Database Scanner from Internet Security Systems, in addition to other test utilities (ping, netcat, dig, nmap, etc.).
The discovered vulnerabilities and our recommendations for either removing them or minimizing them are reported in our Perimeter Test report which we email to the client. We typically quote Perimeter Testing based on the client's network architecture, number of IP addresses to be tested, and the frequency of the tests.
